The Goal Breakdown Process
Inspired by Eliza McCartney's approach to pole vaulting, here's how you can break down any goal into manageable components.
Step 1: Define Your Main Goal
Start by clearly stating your primary objective. Whether it's running a marathon, writing a novel, or starting a business, be specific about what you want to achieve and why you want to achieve it.
Example: "Complete a marathon in under 4 hours within the next 12 months."
Step 2: Break It Down
Divide your main goal into these key categories:
Define your overall objective and your why
Identify necessary abilities
Determine required tools and support
Set intermediate targets
Develop mental resilience
Step 3: Set Specific Objectives for Each Category
For each category, define clear, measurable objectives that contribute to your main goal.
Example for marathon goal:
Visualise crossing the finish line under 4 hours
Example for marathon goal:
Improve running form and increase weekly mileage
